Both the House and Senate versions of the federal budget bill do away with tax incentives for wind and solar projects. These subsidies originated in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) passed in 2022, and their current treatment reveals a GOP Congress wildly out of sync with its constituents.
Red states are getting 75% of the IRA’s clean energy investments, which total $3 billion in current projects and another $10 billion in announced ones.
And a Washington Post-Ipsos poll conducted this month shows that only 22% of Republicans want to end “tax breaks for solar, wind, and geothermal energy.”
Another survey, conducted by Yale and George Mason Universities this spring showed that “64% of registered voters think developing sources of clean energy should be a high or very high priority for the president and Congress.”
